Reporting to the Manager of By-law Enforcement or designate, the Crossing Guard is responsible for safely escorting and assisting children and adults across designated roadways and intersections.

What You Will Do: 

  • Assist members of the public by safely escorting them across the streets as determined by the Town. 

  • Ensure the pedestrian crossing or crosswalk signal is activated in order to cross the intersection in a safe manner, watching for road and safety hazards at all times. 

  • Maintain a positive public image at all times while on duty, including wearing the required personal protective equipment. 

  • Work to educate members of the public on traffic safety regulations and best practices in high traffic areas and promote safe use of pedestrian crossings. 

  • Monitor and report any observed problems or safety concerns arising at the assigned crosswalk or pedestrian crossing to the Manager or designate. 

Qualifications: 

We are looking for a team player who is enthusiastic, customer service focused and who has the following: 

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or equivalent. 

  • Experience working with members of the public, specifically children, and a proven record of reliability is an asset. 

  • Ability to follow directions and instructions and work with minimal supervision. 

  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C or willingness to become certified, an asset. 

  • Good working knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and applicable Regulations, Ontario Traffic Council School Crossing Guard Guide, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS 2015. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times. 

  • Good verbal communication, customer service, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, judgement, and time management skills. 

  • Able to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check. 

  • Possess the physical ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
