Façade Improvement Grant/Loan
Availability
Available to commercial and mixed-use properties in the Central Business District, District Shopping Area (“The Flats”), and Mixed-Use Areas. This program is also available to hotels and motels within the CIP area, and all commercial, institutional and mixed-use buildings within the Central Business District.
Purpose
The purpose of this program is to promote restoration and improvement of the physical condition and visual aesthetic of private buildings through upgrades to the exterior façade. The Town may benefit from enhancements to the streetscape that contribute to a more vibrant and inviting community.
Funding Opportunity
The Town provides up to 50% of the cost of approved façade improvement projects to a maximum of $10,000. The maximum municipal contribution would be a $5,000 interest-free loan and $5,000 grant. At the sole discretion of the Town, an increased maximum municipal contribution of $15,000 ($7,500 interest-free loan and $7,500 grant) may be provided if:
- The building has more than one (1) street address and/or storefront;
- The building has more than one (1) wall that is visible from a public street or public space, or fronts onto a laneway or parking lot; and/or
- Original heritage features are being restored
Eligibility
The following evaluation criteria will be used to determine if the applicant will be eligible to receive funding (continued on next page):
- Restoration or replacement of existing brickwork or cladding, or installation of new brickwork or cladding;
- Restoration or replacement of cornices, eaves, and parapets;
- Restoration or replacement of windows, doors and awnings;
- Restoration or replacement of exterior lighting;
- Chemical or other façade cleaning;
- Redesign of storefront or entrance modifications, including provisions to improve accessibility for people with disabilities; and
- Such other similar improvements and repairs that may be necessary to improve the appearance of a building façade exterior as may be approved by the Town
