Septic system maintenance inspection program underway

BRACEBRIDGE (June 8, 2026) – The Town of Bracebridge is conducting its Sewage System Maintenance Inspection Program until the end of August to help property owners ensure their private on-site septic systems are functioning safely and efficiently.

Inspections this year are taking place on waterfront properties around the following lakes:

  • Clear Lake
  • Little Leech Lake
  • Bird Lake
  • Prospect Lake
  • Bigwind Lake
  • Spring Lake

The Town is committed to preserving natural water resources and ensuring a healthy environment for everyone. This proactive program aims to safeguard the health of local lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater systems. By participating in the program, and adhering to recommended maintenance practices, property owners play a vital role in mitigating environmental risks, protecting their property values, and safeguarding community drinking water sources.

What Property Owners Can Expect

  • Initial site visit: Inspectors will perform a visual assessment of the property, noting the type and number of buildings connected to the system, the system’s type, and any visible signs of malfunction.
  • Visual inspection criteria: Key indicators of problems with a septic system include evidence of sewage effluent leaking, bad odours, erosion on or around the septic bed, surface water or groundwater flowing toward the system, or unusually green or thick grass over parts of the tile bed.
  • No need to be home: Property owners do not need to be present for the inspection. Inspectors will come onto the property during standard hours and be easily identifiable by their official Town of Bracebridge identification.
  • Post-inspection notice and follow-up: Once the assessment is complete, inspectors will leave a notice on-site confirming they were there. Following the visit, you will receive a letter outlining the results of the inspection and indicating if any specific maintenance or repairs are required.

Tips for a Healthy Septic System
Proper maintenance is crucial to extend the lifespan of a septic system and protect the environment.

  • Pump regularly: Pump the septic tank every three to five years, depending on usage, to prevent sludge build-up;
  • Watch what you flush: Do not use sink garburators or dispose of grease, oils, solvents, paints, food waste, or non-biodegradable items like baby wipes and sanitary products into the system;
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Refrain from introducing harsh chemicals, bleaches, degreasers, septic system additives, or pharmaceuticals into the system;
  • Watch what you plant: Avoid planting deep-rooted vegetation or trees within 19’8” feet (6 meters) of the leaching bed to prevent root intrusion into pipes; and
  • Protect the tile bed: Do not park vehicles, trailers, or equipment on the tile bed, as this can cause compaction and damage.
