Town of Bracebridge urges residents to stay safe and ensure proper carbon monoxide alarm protection

BRACEBRIDGE, ON (May 7, 2026) – The Town of Bracebridge is advising residents to remain vigilant when purchasing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms online, following reports of misleading and potentially fraudulent social media posts.

The Bracebridge Fire Department is aware of recurring social media posts promoting  carbon monoxide alarms that claim to be better than others. These posts often use alarming language and emotional stories to encourage quick purchases. Residents are reminded to be diligent online and to be vigilant when reviewing content and clicking on ad links.

What to look for when purchasing alarms
To ensure your home is properly protected, residents are encouraged to:

  • Consider smoke and carbon monoxide alarms from reputable retailers and well-known brands;
  • Avoid deals that seem too good to be true or rely on urgent, fear-based messaging; and
  • Verify that the product is certified for use in Canada.
Safety certification marks to look for
When buying alarms, ensure the packaging includes at least one of the following recognized Canadian certification marks:
  • ULC (Underwriters Laboratories of Canada)
  • CSA (Canadian Standards Association Group)
  • cUL (UL certification for Canada)
  • ETL (Intertek Testing Services), marked with a “c” for Canada
These marks indicate the product has been independently tested and meets established safety standards.

Stay informed and ask questions
Residents who are unsure about the safety or legitimacy of an alarm are encouraged to reach out to the Bracebridge Fire Department for guidance. For more information on fire safety and carbon monoxide protection, visit bracebridge.ca/fire or contact the Bracebridge Fire Department directly.

Quotes

“Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are critical to keeping your household safe. Unfortunately, not all products sold online meet the rigorous safety standards required in Canada. Purchasing uncertified devices could result in alarms that fail to activate in an emergency. The Bracebridge Fire Department team is here to help. If you have questions about your alarms or need help choosing the right product, don’t hesitate to contact us. We would much rather answer your questions today than respond to an emergency tomorrow.”
