Reporting to the Recreation Programmer or designate, the Inclusion Counsellor is responsible for providing one-to-one personal care and direct supervision of individuals with exceptionalities in a recreation program setting. The Inclusion Counsellor maintains a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all participants and supports recreation program staff in delivering high quality programs for all participants.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one personal care and direct supervision of participants with exceptionalities, including physical and cognitive disabilities, behavioral challenges, and/or emotional challenges.
- Assist participant with activities of daily living as needed based on the individual’s needs, including but not limited to feeding, dressing, toileting, and emotional regulation.
- Ensure the well-being and physical and emotional safety of participants and staff.
- Develop, plan, organize, and modify specialty instruction to accommodate the participant to ensure an inclusive experience.
- Provide guidance and support to fellow staff, and volunteers to ensure inclusive programming.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. Enrollment in, or completion of, a post-secondary diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, Personal Support Worker, Child and Youth Care, or Developmental/Community Support Worker, is considered an asset.
- Experience working with children and youth with exceptionalities in a recreation or community environment is required.
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C.
- Minimum of 18 years of age or older.
- Non-violent crisis intervention training is considered an asset.
- Previous experience in a recreation operation is considered an asset.
- HIGH FIVE - Principles of Healthy Child Development and HIGH FIVE - Principles of Healthy Aging certification or willingness to obtain, an asset.
- Good working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS 2015.
- Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment and to exhibit courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
- Good written and verbal communication, customer service, organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
- Ability to provide a current and acceptable vulnerable sector police record check.
- Possess the physical ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
