Classification: Full-Time, Permanent
Weekly Hours: 35 hours per week

Compensation: $27.68-$32.37 per hour, commensurate with education & experience. Comprehensive benefits plan upon successful completion of probation.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Library Assistant is a dynamic, creative, and customer service–oriented team member who supports library programs and services for all ages, with a specific focus on Makerspace and Technology Programming. This role includes developing and facilitating innovative programs, offering hands-on support in the Library’s Makerspace, and assisting patrons with digital tools and technology.
The ideal candidate is someone who loves to explore, create, and share skills—whether through 3D printing, sewing, robotics, coding, crafting, laser cutting, or other hands-on technologies. As part of a collaborative team, this position also provides general support across departments, including circulation, displays, collection assistance, and special events.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan and deliver engaging technology and makerspace programs for all ages, including digital and analog creation (e.g., 3D printing, vinyl cutting, robotics, sewing, hand tools, crafting, coding).
- Support programs for all ages across departments, including the Children’s Department.
- Provide hands-on support to patrons in the Makerspace and helps maintain equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Offer basic troubleshooting for public computers, printers, scanners, and personal devices (tablets, e-readers, phones).
- Provide support at service desks, including circulation and information.
- Contribute to library outreach, displays, and promotional efforts.
- Assist with collection maintenance tasks as directed.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication with diverse audiences.
- Work collaboratively with the team and support major library events.
- Show commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and adaptability.
- Perform other duties as required to support library operations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- High school diploma required. Post-secondary education in a related field or experience with programming, technology, or creative projects is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated interest or experience in makerspace tools, DIY projects, creative tech, or digital creation.
- Knowledge of and interest in working with patrons of all ages and abilities.
- Adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and share new tools or technologies.
- A motivated and outgoing personality with a passion for community engagement.
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Strong ability to interact with the public in a positive, helpful manner.
- Proven ability to embrace and champion change.
- Physical ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Ability to provide an acceptable current criminal reference check (with vulnerable sector clearance).
HEALTH & SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
- To be familiar with and practice Library specific health & safety policies and procedures, as well as adopted related policies established by the Town of Bracebridge, and to provide a Police Record Name check as a condition of employment.
- To be familiar with and comply with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and achieve a Certificate of Completion for the Ministry of Labour Occupational Health and Safety awareness training.
- To take every possible precaution to protect themselves and fellow workers from health and safety hazards and unsafe situations.
- To report unsafe acts or conditions to their supervisor or the Library’s Health & Safety Representative or any contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- To report any occupational injury or illness immediately to their supervisor.
- To use personal protective equipment, where required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Hours: Full time, permanent - 35 hours per week, evening & weekend work will be required.
- Physical: Requirement for sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting and in a field environment; to sit for prolonged periods of time; to routinely lift and move shipments in boxes up to 20 kg.; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to assemble minor furniture acquisitions.
- Environment: Work is conducted in an office environment with some exposure to criticism from the public; close proximity to staff-used printer/fax/copier; frequent exposure to paper fibres and dust.
- Requirement to juggle priorities, meet deadlines, verbally communicate to exchange information, deal with constant interruptions and changing demands during the course of a working day. Work outside normal working hours may be required occasionally.
