REPORTS TO: Library Innovation & Technical Services Manager

POSITION SUMMARY
:

The Library Technician II provides advanced technical and public service support within the Bracebridge Library, with a focus on IT infrastructure, Makerspace technologies, and the Recording Studio. This role builds on the core responsibilities of the Library Technician I by expanding into direct IT support functions, including troubleshooting, systems support, and coordination with external Managed Service Providers (MSPs) under the direction of the Library Innovation & Technical Services Manager.

The position ensures the smooth operation of specialized technologies, supports the daily operation and maintenance of computers, networks, and AV equipment, and contributes to the development of innovative programming and services. The Library Technician II provides frontline support to both patrons and staff, helping the community connect with emerging technologies in a welcoming and accessible way.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Technology Support & Maintenance

  • Provide frontline IT support to staff and patrons, including troubleshooting computers, printers, networks, and peripherals.
  • Install, configure, and maintain hardware, software, and peripheral devices, including imaging new computers and applying updates/patches.
  • Support system updates, software installations, and account access management in coordination with the Manager of IT.
  • Assist with setup and teardown of AV equipment for programs and events (projectors, sound systems, presentation equipment).
  • Document and maintain IT procedures, troubleshooting notes, and usage guides for staff and patrons.
  • Maintain statistics and reports related to IT support requests and outcomes.

2. Network & System Support

  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining reliable staff and public Wi-Fi and LAN connectivity.
  • Support basic data security measures, including antivirus software, firewalls, and backups, in collaboration with the Manager and MSPs.
  • Liaise with external MSPs for escalated issues, ensuring smooth resolution.

3.  Makerspace and Recording Studio

  • Provide advanced support for the operation and maintenance of 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, robotics, audio/video recording equipment, and other emerging technologies.
  • Assist with equipment calibration, minor repairs, and preventative maintenance.
  • Provide one-on-one and group training sessions for patrons and staff on Makerspace and Recording Studio technologies.
  • Support the Makerspace Coordinator in the planning and delivery of workshops, drop-in times, and outreach events.
  • Develop guides, tutorials, and training materials for technology use.
  • Contribute to the development and enforcement of safe use protocols for specialized equipment.

4. Inventory & Asset Management

  • Maintain inventory of library technology assets, including hardware, software, and licenses.
  • Track equipment lifecycle and provide input on replacement or upgrade needs.
  • Support the environmentally responsible disposal of obsolete or non-functional equipment.

5. Library Services & Technical Functions

  • Assist with receiving, processing, cataloguing, and repairing library materials, as required.
  • Support database maintenance, MARC record modifications, and digitization projects.
  • Provide assistance to patrons with digital services (Libby, databases, online tools).
  • Deliver 1:1 technology training and contribute to technology programming.
  • Provide coverage at public service desks, including circulation and information services, with a warm and welcoming approach.
  • Contribute to major library events and initiatives as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Library Technician Diploma; post-secondary education in IT, Computer Science, or related field an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in IT troubleshooting (hardware/software/peripherals).
  • Experience with Makerspace and/or recording studio technologies (3D printing, laser cutting, AV recording, robotics, etc.).
  • Knowledge of library cataloguing, MARC records, and database maintenance.
  • Experience with multiple operating systems (Windows, macOS; mobile OS familiarity an asset).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to teach and train individuals of all ages and abilities.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment while also exercising initiative and independence.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the role, including lifting/moving up to 20 kg.
  • Acceptable current criminal reference check.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in an office and Makerspace environment.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 20 kg and prolonged periods of sitting or standing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Requirement for sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office/library setting.
  2. Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  3. Required to view a computer screen for long periods of time.
  4. Ability to routinely lift and move shipments in boxes up to 20 kg.
  5. Ability to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
  6. Work is conducted in close proximity to staff-used printer/fax/copier with frequent exposure to paper fibres and dust.
  7. Requirement to juggle priorities, meet deadlines, verbally communicate to exchange information, deal with constant interruptions and changing demands during the course of a working day.

HOURS OF WORK:

Full-time: 35 hours per week. Shift work, evening and weekends will be required.

Compensation: $27.68-$32.37 per hour, commensurate with education & experience. Comprehensive benefits plan upon successful completion of probation.

Occupational Health and Safety awareness training from the Ministry of Labour and WHMIS training will be required. A current criminal record check, with vulnerable sector clearance, will also be required for the successful candidate.
