Purbrook Bridge replacement progressing to next stage of construction

BRACEBRIDGE, ON (September 21, 2026) – Construction is progressing on the Purbrook Bridge replacement project, with initial site preparation now complete and the next stage of bridge construction set to begin.

The Town’s contractor for the project has completed the initial preparation required for installation of the new bridge including erosion and sediment control measures, installation of environmental turtle exclusion fencing, removal of the existing road surface, and placement of granular road base along the bridge approaches.

Over the next three weeks, crews will focus on preparing the foundations and supporting structures for the new bridge. This work will include:

• Excavation for the new spread footings;
• Installation of helical pile foundations;
• Construction of the cast-in-place bridge footings and abutment; and
• Installation of precast ballast walls.

Traffic will continue to move through the construction area during this phase, with occasional disruption expected during construction hours for crews to adjust for safe passage. As individual stages of work are completed, temporary timber mats will be placed to safely carry vehicles over active work areas.

Bridge installation planned for late October/early November
The new prefabricated bridge structure is expected to be delivered and installed by early November. This will require a scheduled night-time road closure to safely accommodate the delivery and installation of the bridge. Additional information about the date, timing and expected duration of the closure will be provided once the schedule is confirmed.

Following installation of the new bridge, crews will complete guiderail installation and place additional granular road base in preparation for asphalt paving. Weather conditions will determine when the final paving work can be completed. If winter conditions prevent asphalt placement, paving may be deferred until spring 2027.

Residents are reminded to use caution when travelling through the construction area, follow all posted signage and be prepared for changing traffic conditions as construction progresses.
