Purbrook Bridge Replacement

Contract 2026-TOB-RFT-006
The Town of Bracebridge is replacing the Purbrook Road Bridge along with additional road works to ensure safe and reliable access for residents and visitors. The existing bridge, located over McKay Creek, is more than 100 years old and has reached the end of its service life. Following its most recent inspection, full replacement was recommended due to advanced deterioration. Replacing the bridge ensures continued access for the approximately 140 properties located beyond the structure.
This project will deliver a modern, durable structure designed to meet current engineering standards while minimizing environmental impacts and construction disruption.

To minimize environmental impacts and reduce construction complexity, an innovative bridge‑replacement approach will be used that allows the existing bridge to remain in place while a new structure is built over and behind. This method helps protect the surrounding natural environment and shortens the time needed for on‑site construction.

The public is encouraged to plan their travel in advance. If you have specific access needs or require accommodations during the closure, please contact the project team.
Motorists can expect periodic single-lane traffic restrictions to support ongoing construction activities. Traffic will be maintained through the work zone using flaggers and/or Yield to Oncoming Traffic controls.
To keep traffic moving through the area, temporary timber mats, steel plates, and gravel ramps will be installed over portions of the active work zone as construction progresses. These temporary crossings will be adjusted as needed during construction hours and throughout the project.
To allow crews to safely complete critical construction work, temporary overnight road closures will be required.
These closures will occur during periods of lower traffic volume, helping crews complete the work safely and efficiently while minimizing impacts to daytime travel.
On-site crews will be setup to assist Emergency services navigate the work zone if required.

Why can’t the existing bridge be repaired?
The bridge has reached the end of its lifecycle and is experiencing advanced deterioration. Replacement is the safest and most cost-effective long-term solution.
Construction is expected to begin in late June 2026, pending final approvals and contractor scheduling.
Will I still be able to access my property?
Yes, for most of the project. Temporary access will be maintained except during short-term full closures, which will be communicated in advance.
Closure durations will be determined as the project progressed. Updates will be shared as soon as details are available.
Will emergency services be able to reach my property?
There will be periods where access is impacted. The Town is working closely with emergency services to manage these situations and maintain response plans.
Yes. Some work may occur at night to reduce daytime disruptions.
