Position: Student – Public Works Operations

Reporting to the Parks and Trails Foreperson, Public Works Foreperson or designate, the Public Works Student performs general landscape and maintenance labour services to municipal parks, trails, gardens, facilities and roads as part of a dynamic team responsible for keeping Bracebridge beautiful and safe.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist with day-to-day outdoor maintenance and ensures that the parks, trails, and grounds amenities of the Town are well kept, as well as other public areas around the community.
  • Perform general landscaping and inspections; turf maintenance such as grass cutting, trimming, raking, aerating, seeding, fertilizing, and laying sod.
  • Complete waste collection and litter pickup.
  • Perform garden maintenance such as weeding, watering, planting, pruning, applying and working soil and mulch.
  • Assist with trail maintenance including grooming, brushing, branch removal, structure repair and signage.
  • Assist with general road maintenance activities such as traffic control, signage and performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • An Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent and currently enrolled in or graduating from post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Previous landscape, groundskeeping, gardening and/or maintenance operations experience is an asset.
  • Experience with the safe operation and handling of equipment and tools such as grass trimmers, lawnmowers and hand tools, and cleaning products.
  • Good working knowledge of the Ontario Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, MTO Traffic Control (Book 7) and WHMIS 2015 is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team environment or independently and to exhibit courtesy, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public, department officials and other members of staff. Ability to adhere to confidentiality requirements at all times.
  • Good written and verbal communication, organizational, analytical, problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain prior to commencement of employment.
  • Ability to provide an acceptable, current criminal reference check.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License (Class G2 or Class G) with an acceptable, current driver’s abstract.
  • Possess the physical ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Protective footwear and clothing required.
