Town of Bracebridge scoops up sweet solution with new proposed tax
BRACEBRIDGE, ON (April 1, 2026) –Things are about to get a little sweeter, and possibly a little stickier, in Bracebridge, as Town Council announces it is reviewing a bold new revenue tool, the Cone-tribution Scoop Levy, more affectionately dubbed the “Ice Cream Tax”.
Designed to help support local tourism and keep Bracebridge cool year-round, the proposed levy would apply a flavour-based tax to all frozen treats sold within municipal boundaries. This community focused program will top your favourite scoop with a sprinkle of civic responsibility.
Under the draft by-law, tax rates would vary depending on flavour popularity and “brain freeze risk,” with classic vanilla receiving a modest rate, while premium flavours like double chocolate fudge brownie swirl (with sprinkles, obviously) may see a slightly higher scoop… er, scope.
To ensure compliance, the Town is also considering enhanced enforcement measures through a newly proposed division, Ice Cream Compliance and Confections Control. The unit would oversee all ice cream-related activity, including licensing of pop-up vendors, monitoring cone-to-cup ratios, and responding to reports of unauthorized sprinkle distribution.
Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts as Council continues to churn through the details. Public consultation will include opportunities to weigh in online, at Town Hall, and potentially at a series of “tasteful” engagement events.
More information on the proposed levy will be shared as it freezes up. Until then, Bracebridge reminds residents to stay cool, enjoy responsibly, and remember, this idea may just be the cherry on top of a very fun April Fools joke.
