Library Facilities Technician 

Full-Time, Permanent & Part-Time/Casual

Position Summary

Reporting to the Administrative Assistant, the Library Facilities Technician is responsible for supporting the safe, clean, secure, and efficient operation of the Bracebridge Library and associated public and staff spaces. This position performs custodial duties, preventative maintenance, room and event setups, facility inspections, minor repairs, and operational support to ensure the library remains welcoming, functional, and maintained to a high standard for patrons, staff, and community partners.

The Library Facilities Technician plays an important role in supporting the overall patron experience while helping maintain a safe, accessible, and secure environment within a busy, modern public library facility.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance & Operations

  • Perform daily custodial and cleaning duties throughout the facility, including public areas, staff spaces, washrooms, meeting rooms, makerspaces, offices, kitchens, and program areas.
  • Monitor facility cleanliness and presentation standards and identify areas requiring additional attention.
  • Complete routine facility inspections and report maintenance, repair, safety, or operational concerns.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair tasks including touch-up painting, furniture adjustments, minor repairs, changing light bulbs, equipment assembly, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Assist with seasonal cleaning, deep cleaning projects, and operational resets as required.
  • Maintain supply inventories for custodial and facility-related materials and notify supervisors when replenishment is required.
  • Assist with waste management, recycling, cardboard removal, and general facility organization.
  • Exterior maintenance of the facility, including snow removal, is not required and remains the responsibility of the Town of Bracebridge.
  • Coordinate with external contractors and service providers as required.

Room Setups & Event Support

  • Assemble, move, and dismantle furniture and equipment for meetings, programs, events, outreach activities, and community rentals.
  • Assist staff with event preparation, setup, takedown, and operational support for library initiatives and community events.
  • Ensure public spaces remain safe, accessible, clean, and welcoming before, during, and after programs and events.
  • Assist with signage placement, public space resets, and room turnover between bookings.

Security & Safety

  • Conduct regular building walkthroughs and facility checks.
  • Assist in securing the building and ensuring spaces are safely closed and monitored when working independently.
  • Identify, document, and report security concerns, hazards, damage, maintenance concerns, or unusual activity.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, accidents, or facility concerns and escalate issues as required.
  • Ensure work is completed in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements, WHMIS standards, accessibility requirements, and library policies and procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe environment for staff, patrons, volunteers, and community partners.
    Customer Service & Team Support
  • Interact professionally and courteously with patrons, staff, contractors, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Provide assistance and directions to patrons when required.
  • Work collaboratively with all library departments to support daily operations and organizational goals.
  • Support a positive and welcoming environment that reflects the values and mission of the Bracebridge Library.
  • Assist with special projects and additional operational duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in custodial services, facility operations, maintenance, building support, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience performing minor maintenance, repairs, safe use of cleaning products, and operation of custodial equipment considered an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and WHMIS requirements.
  • Ability to identify and report safety hazards and operational concerns.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively in a public-facing environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to use digital reporting or scheduling systems considered an asset.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
  • A current and acceptable Criminal Reference Check, with acceptable vulnerable sector screening, will be required prior to employment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a dynamic public library environment, including frequent movement throughout public and staff areas, meeting rooms, makerspaces, storage areas, and exterior spaces.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, reach, and lift for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to safely lift, move, and transport furniture, equipment, supplies, and materials weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
  • Frequent use of custodial equipment, hand tools, ladders, carts, and cleaning products in accordance with safety standards.
  • Work may involve exposure to dust, cleaning chemicals, noise, minor hazards, and varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work independently, respond to changing operational priorities, and manage interruptions in a busy public environment.
  • Work outside regular operating hours, including evenings and weekends, may occasionally be required.

Reports to: Administrative Assistant

Hours and Compensation

Full-Time Position

  • 35 hours per week.
  • This position requires flexibility and will include daytime, evening, and weekend shifts based on operational requirements.

Part-Time/Casual Support Position

  • Hours are scheduled on an as-needed basis to support operational requirements, special events, vacation coverage, and facility demands.
  • Daytime, evening, and weekend availability is required.

Compensation

Both positions are classified as Grade 3 under the Bracebridge Library Compensation Grid, with a salary range of $28.44–$33.26 per hour. Initial placement within the salary range will be determined based on qualifications and relevant experience.

The full-time position includes participation in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan and is eligible for a comprehensive benefits package and paid vacation upon successful completion of the probationary period.

Training Requirements

Successful candidates will be required to complete Occupational Health and Safety Awareness Training, WHMIS training, and any additional job-related certifications or training required by the Library.
