Staying safe during extreme heat

BRACEBRIDGE, ON (June 20, 2025) – Environment Canada is forecasting a multi-day heat event that may start Saturday and last until at least the middle of next week. Temperatures could reach up to 32°C with humidex values that could reach up to the low forties.

The Town of Bracebridge encourages everyone to take extra care during this period of extreme heat to protect themselves and others.
  • Dress for the weather. Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Limit outdoor activities. Stay in shaded areas whenever possible and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Wear sunscreen. Apply sunscreen regularly, especially if spending time outdoors.
  • Keep cool at home. If you don’t have air conditioning, stay hydrated and take cool showers or baths.
  • Take advantage of public spaces. Visit air-conditioned public spaces like shopping centres to cool off. The Muskoka Lumber Community Centre and Sportsplex are available to cool off in during regular business hours
  • Cool down by the water. Visit local beaches and public water access points around Bracebridge.
  • Block the sun. Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to reduce indoor heat.
  • Check on others. Reach out to family, friends, neighbours, and vulnerable community members who may need support.
Extreme heat can make you feel unwell and may worsen existing health conditions. If you or someone you are caring for experiences symptoms such as confusion, unconsciousness, or stops sweating, call 9-1-1 immediately.
