How to Stay Safe During Extreme Cold

Here are some key safety tips to protect yourself and your family when the temperature drops:

Dress for the Weather

  • Wear several warm layers, including a wind-resistant outer layer.
  • Cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite—wear mittens, a hat, and a scarf or face covering.
  • Keep dry. Wet clothing chills the body rapidly.

Limit Time Outdoors

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to cold.
  • Take breaks indoors if working or playing outside.
  • Bring pets indoors or ensure they have adequate shelter.

Heat Your Home Safely

  • Never use barbecues, camp stoves, or generators indoors.
  • Ensure space heaters are CSA-approved and kept at least 3 feet from anything flammable.
  • Check that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working.

Be Prepared

  • Have an emergency kit prepared that includes flashlights, extra blankets, food, water, medications etc.
  • Keep mobile devices charged and check in on vulnerable neighbours.
  • Stay informed through local weather alerts and Town communications.

Resources

Exposure to cold weather can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening health problems. Cold-related adverse health outcomes are preventable. You can protect yourself and those you care about by understanding how cold weather affects your health and by taking appropriate actions to reduce the risk.

Visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit for information on how to stay safe during extreme cold.

Generators, when used properly, can provide an alternative power source. However, they must be used safely and properly.
  • Never operate a generator inside your home or garage. It can cause a build-up of fatal fumes, including carbon monoxide. Fans or open windows and doors do not provide enough fresh air to keep you safe;
  • Never connect portable generators to electrical appliances or wiring components that have been affected/damaged by water;
  • If extension cords must be used, only use grounded cords that are rated for proper use;
  • Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable. Allow the generator engine to cool for at least two minutes before refueling and always use fresh gasoline; and
  • Ensure that generators are placed away from the house and that snow and ice are cleared from around the unit to ensure proper ventilation.
