Extreme Heat

Extreme Heat Events

When extreme heat events occur, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself, your family, and vulnerable members of the community. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can pose serious health risks, especially for young children, older adults, people with pre-existing health conditions, and those without access to air conditioning.

Take the necessary steps to stay safe in extreme heat.

  • Dress for the weather. Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Limit outdoor activities. Stay in shaded areas whenever possible and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Wear sunscreen. Apply sunscreen regularly, especially if spending time outdoors.
  • Keep cool at home. If you don’t have air conditioning, stay hydrated and take cool showers or baths.
  • Take advantage of public spaces. Visit air-conditioned public spaces like shopping centres or Town facilities during operational hours to cool off.
  • Cool down by the water. Visit local beaches and public water access points around Bracebridge.
  • Block the sun. Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to reduce indoor heat.
  • Check on others. Reach out to family, friends, neighbours, and vulnerable community members who may need support.

Resources

Heat can harm health in different ways, including causing illness and death. Heat-related illnesses include dehydration, heat cramps, heat rash, heat edema (swelling of hands and feet), heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Heat can make existing illnesses like lung and heart conditions worse, which could lead to serious illness or death. In addition, heat can increase risks for pregnant people and newborns. It can also affect mental health, causing mood and behavioural problems, worsening mental illness, and increasing increased aggression, violence, and suicide.

Visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit for information on how to stay safe during extreme heat.
