Residential Signage

Most signs in residential areas are small and intended for identification or temporary purposes.

Permit Exempt: Residential signs do not require a permit, but they must follow the specific size and placement rules in the Town of Bracebridge Sign By-law, key provisions of which are summarized below.

Typical Residential Sign Types

These signs identify the residents or the property itself.

  • Sign Types: Homeowner’s name, street address (or 911 number), and "No Trespassing" or safety signs.

  • Maximum Size: 0.4 sq. m. (4.3 sq. ft.) per face.

  • Placement: Must be on private property and at least 2.0 m (6 ft. 7 in.) from the street line.

If you operate a legal home-based business, you are permitted one sign to identify your services.

  • Home Occupation & Bed and Breakfasts:

    • Max Size: 0.4 sq. m. (4.3 sq. ft.) .

    • Setback: Must be at least 2.0 m (6 ft. 7 in.) from the property line.

     

  • Home Industry (e.g., workshop or small-scale production in an accessory building):

    • Max Size: 1.5 sq. m. (16 sq. ft.) per face.

    • Max Height: 3.7 m (12 ft.).

    • Setback: Must be at least 3.0 m (10 ft.) from the property line.

     

  • Permit: Not required.

  • Maximum Size: 0.6 sq. m. (6.5 sq. ft.) per face.

  • Maximum Height: 1.0 m (3 ft. 3 in.).

  • Timing Regulations:

  • Install: No sooner than 1 calendar day prior to the sale.

  • Remove: Must be removed within 2 days of the conclusion of the sale.

  • Quantity Limits:

    • Maximum 3 signs per garage sale.

    • Maximum 4 garage sales per calendar year per resident.

  • Location & Spacing:

    • Public Property: Permitted on Municipal boulevards (road allowances).

    • Spacing: Signs must be spaced at least 30 m (98 ft.) apart.

    • Setback: Must be at least 1.0 m (3 ft. 3 in.) from the street line/lot line.

    • Restrictions: Signs cannot advertise a sale located outside of the Town of Bracebridge boundaries.

Advocacy signs allow residents to express non-commercial opinions or support for a cause, movement, or organization. 

  • Permit: Not required (if meeting the criteria below).

  • Maximum Size: 0.6 sq. m. (6.5 sq. ft.).

  • Maximum Height: 1.0 m (3 ft. 3 in.).

  • Quantity: Limit of one (1) Private Advocacy Sign per lot at any time.

  • Location:

    • Private Property: Must be located on the lot (Private Advocacy signs do not have the explicit permission listed for boulevards that Garage Sale signs do).

    • Setback: Must be set back at least 1.0 m (3 ft. 3 in.) from the lot line.

  • Prohibitions:

    • Must not be illuminated, digital, animated, or flashing.

    • Must not contain any commercial advertising.

  • Exemption: These signs do not count toward the maximum number or area of other signs permitted on the lot.
