- Snow and ice conditions should be addressed within 24 hours after the end of a winter event or once a hazard is identified.
- Snow clearing typically begins when 5 cm (2 inches) of snow has accumulated, or sooner if safety requires it.
- Priority areas include parking lots serving:
- Municipal buildings and emergency services
- High-volume public facilities
- Downtown and high-turnover parking areas
Winter Maintenance
What you need to know
The Town of Bracebridge has established winter maintenance guidelines to support safe parking lots, consistent practices, and responsible salt use. These guidelines help private contractors and local businesses understand municipal expectations and best practices.
- Snow should be piled in designated areas within the parking lot unless hauling is required for safety or space reasons.
- Ice is managed through mechanical scraping and the use of salt or abrasives, depending on conditions.
- Treatment should occur as soon as practical after ice forms or a hazardous condition is identified
Salt & Material Use (Best Practices)
To protect the environment while maintaining safety:
- Use pre-wetted salt where possible to reduce bounce and over-application.
- Apply materials based on pavement temperature, not just air temperature.
- Reduce salt use when temperatures drop below -10°C, as effectiveness decreases.
- Use sand or abrasives in extreme cold when salt is less effective
Equipment & Storage Requirements
- All spreading equipment must be calibrated at least once per season.
- Contractors are expected to ensure:
- Properly functioning equipment
- Even material distribution
- Trained operators
- Salt must be stored:
- On an impermeable surface
- Covered to prevent runoff
- In contained loading areas to protect waterways
- The Town is actively working to reduce chloride levels in local waterways.
- Over-application of salt impacts lakes, groundwater, infrastructure, vegetation, and drinking water.
- Efficient plowing, anti-icing where appropriate, and careful material use all help reduce environmental impact

Salt Management Plan
As part of the Town’s new Salt Management Plan, the Town of Bracebridge is encouraging residents and businesses to be salt conscious this winter. Road salt helps keep roads, sidewalks, and parking lots safe, but when used excessively, it can harm the environment and affect local drinking water sources. The Town is implementing best practices for salt storage, application, and monitoring to protect water quality, while continuing to prioritize public safety. Residents can help by shoveling first, using only what’s needed, and storing salt properly to prevent runoff into storm drains, rivers, and lakes.
Did you know that just one coffee cup worth of salt is enough to cover about 10 sidewalk squares?
Using more doesn’t make ice melt faster — it just washes into storm drains and eventually into our rivers and lakes. When snow or ice appears, spread salt evenly and only where it’s needed. A little goes a long way when we all do our part to protect local waterways.
Quick facts:
- Salt works best between 0°C and -7°C, below that, it can stop working altogether.
- If it’s colder, sand is a better choice for traction.
- Before salting, check the temperature and weather forecast to make sure you’re using the right material at the right time.
- Clearing snow before applying salt gives it a chance to do its job more effectively. Salt works by melting thin layers of ice, not deep piles of snow.
Be smart about salt
When snow and ice melt, the salt we use doesn’t disappear — it travels through storm drains into rivers, streams, and groundwater. Over time, this can increase chloride levels, harming fish, plants, and water quality. By being mindful with how much we use, we can help protect the Muskoka River and the many beautiful lakes that define Bracebridge. Safe roads and clean water can go hand-in-hand when we’re all salt smart.
